武蔵野美術大学造形学部空間演出デザイン学科卒業

大学在学中より世界各地を旅しながら独学で写真を始める。1996年、初めて訪れたニューヨークでスケートボードと出会い、コミュニティの内側からその姿を記録し始める。その後ニューヨークへ拠点を移し、制作活動を本格化。

作品発表の手段として1998年よりZINEを継続的に制作し、2003年から2009年まで「ART BY XEROX」のサポートを受ける。2010年よりヨセミテ国立公園に通い始め、クライマーのコミュニティを主題とした作品制作を展開。2014年に写真集『Camp 4, Yosemite』を刊行。

カリフォルニアへ拠点を移して以降は、約10年にわたり毎年数か月をヨセミテで過ごしながら、人間と自然との関係性を主題に制作を続けている。

現在はカリフォルニアを拠点に活動。

Yuri Shibuya is a photographer whose practice centers on long-term immersion within subcultures and place-based communities. After relocating to New York City, she worked closely with skateboarders, creating photographs that examine identity, freedom, and collective space from within the community itself. In 1998, she began producing zines as a means of presenting her work, and from 2003 to 2009 she was supported by ART BY XEROX.

In 2014, Shibuya published Camp4, Yosemite, a photo book set in Yosemite National Park that focuses on the historic climbers’ campground Camp 4. Since relocating to California, she has spent several months each year in Yosemite for nearly a decade, exploring the relationship between humans and nature.

She currently lives and works in California.
