In 1996, Yuri Shibuya visited New York City and began photographing its skateboarding scene. What started with a chance encounter at Astor Place grew into fourteen years of documenting a close-knit community of skateboarders and the city they inhabited.
From the streets of downtown Manhattan to the gritty, overlooked corners of the outer boroughs, She photographed skaters, their surroundings, and the everyday moments between sessions. Her images trace a period of remarkable change, capturing New York before and after 9/11, as its once-local skateboarding scene evolved into a global phenomenon.
Shot on film between the mid-1990s and the rise of digital photography and social media, many of these photographs have remained largely unseen until now. Beyond documenting skateboarding, they reveal the relationships, trust, and shared experiences between photographer and subject.
Together, these images offer an intimate portrait of a skateboarding community and a New York City that has since disappeared or been transformed.
